When multiple items are joined together to be dragged by a single power source, this is referred to as towing.
Equipment or vehicular towing is shown by a tractor dragging a stump of a tree. A tow truck or “wrecker” transports damaged or otherwise incapacitated equipment in its most basic form. Popular examples include tractor-trailer combinations, freight or recreational vehicles hitched to cars and trucks via pintle or ball trailer hitches, and trailers for gudgeon tangles.
Tow ropes pulled by workers or draft horses along towpaths of the banks of rivers or canals were commonly used to propel barges.
For moving and towing a trailer, three main components are needed. These involve the vehicle used to tow, the trailer and payload being towed, and the components of the system used to tow (e.g., hitch system and safety chains). Each has its own set of limitations that have a direct effect on maximum towing ability.
Trailers are of many types and some of which are summarised below:
1. Small Trailers
These are four-sided and a top fully enclosed small trailer. These trailers are widely used to transport livestock because they protect the contents from the weather and external elements. Packages, appliances, and other items are also transported in these trucks.
2. Shipping Trailers
Shipping trailers are made specifically for transporting boats. These containers are bought based on the type and design of the boat being towed, and they are designed for fast loading of the boat, in and out of the water. They’re open trailers with distinctive shapes for transporting and securing boats, but they’re classified as separate categories as a result.
3. RV Trailers
Recreational vehicle (RV) trailers are camper trailers or vehicles that are usually equipped with living quarters. Even though some are self-propelled (coordinated with a vehicle motor), most are designed to be towed behind a tow bar. Many trucks and cars come with trailer hitches, and RV trailers are frequently used for camping and road trips.
4. Big Rig Trailers
Platforms that don’t have any points or sides are known as flatbed or open trailers. These are ideal for transporting huge or unusually shaped things.
They are trailers used to transport liquids like water, milk, or gasoline.
Container trailers can be used with a stroller and a front frame. Containers are also used as railroad boxcars and stacked on ships.
Trailer boxes without containers are indeed common, and they work in the same way as the containers mentioned above, except that the dolly and stand are permanently attached to the box.
5. Specialised Trailer
A customised vehicle, such as a transport truck, military trailer, tank, or troop carrier, or an uncommonly huge “big rig”, are examples of trailers for special applications. When pulled behind a motor, unpowered railroad cars are also included in this classification.
Hiring Professional Towing Services
For those who aren’t familiar with trucks, determining what type of vehicle or truck is needed to tow your stuck objects or vehicles, can be difficult. To avoid hassle and mistakes when selecting the truck you need, it is best to employ companies that offer these services.
